VANDERBILT PLAZA

Vanderbilt Plaza is pedestrian-only street abutting Grand Central Station. It is the result of the pedestrianization of Vanderbilt Ave., providing comfortable and safe access to the station’s east entrance, and a lively social space outside of 1 Vanderbilt, a new tower development. Paved with granite cobbles in a radiating pattern, the plaza mimics the effect of stones dropped in water, while creating comfortable seating arrangements and shade for the busy thoroughfare. The plaza is a welcomed island of planting and intricate paving design in an area of the city that lacks adequate green space. Participating in early design iterations, Soft Systems Studio (via Nicholas Lynch) studied possible layout variations, lighting design and planting.
