COSTA RICA ECO-VILLAGE
Project Status: Ongoing
This project combines art, sustainability, and community participation at the heart of an eco-village in Costa Rica. The centerpiece of the design is a vertical water tower, doubling as a pumped-water energy generator, positioned within a small roundabout. This region is characterized by intense rainy seasons followed by harsh droughts, making water a critical resource for the village. With innovative permaculture practices and detention ponds already in place, the tower takes sustainability a step further. During the rainy season, it stores excess water at the top, ready to be released during drier periods. As the water descends, it powers a small turbine, generating electricity for the local grid.
Although not intended to supply all the village's energy needs, this artwork serves as an introduction to renewable energy, inviting residents to actively engage in sustainable practices. By providing a tangible way to experience energy generation, the tower fosters a sense of participation and empowerment in processes that are typically inaccessible. Beyond its practical benefits, the tower is a symbol of the village’s commitment to ecological stewardship and serves as an energy offset during peak usage, helping to meet the village’s demands while also acting as a beacon of innovation.
